How to Support Children of Divorce
Thursday Dec 02, 2021
Thursday Dec 02, 2021
Cindy Grossman is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Executive Director of Kids' Turn San Diego, a caring, non-profit organization that has been creating better futures for children experiencing family separation and divorce since 1996. Being a parent and a child of divorce, Cindy offers a unique blend of personal experience and professional expertise. Today, Cindy uses her combined experience to help transform the lives of families experiencing hardships.
Half of all marriages end in divorce, causing children to struggle with feelings of anxiety and depression at high rates. While divorce is never a child's fault, Cindy explains that children often place blame on themselves because they don’t understand their own emotions. To help break this negative cycle, Cindy and her staff at Kids’ Turn San Diego aim to give every child a place where they can express themselves and work through any negative, internalized behaviors. When children feel safe with their parents, families can overcome any roadblock.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy to learn more about the importance of overcoming childhood trauma, effective communication, and how to empower your children to express themselves so they can create a brighter future.
Quotes
• “Around 50% of all married couples get divorced and yet children still feel isolated and alone.” (12:54-13:04)
• “There's no decision that should be made without consultation between both parents.” (18:30-18:35)
• “You would be surprised by how many children internally think that they did something wrong which led to their parent's divorce.” (22:52-23:02)
• “When you gain insight, you can change things. You can realize you have no control over somebody else, only yourself, and other people can't make you feel any certain way.” (23:29-23:40)
• “When you empower a child to understand what a feeling is, give them a feeling vocabulary, and then you offer ways for them to share and express themselves. They let it out of their heart and they don't have to internalize anymore.” (24:22-24:42)
• “A strong mom is a mom who accepts that she doesn't have to be perfect.” (29:37-29:42)

The Love Designers Guide to Post-Divorce Love
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Thursday Nov 18, 2021
Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions in your life, yet many people rush into relationships that aren't aligned with their souls. Witnessing many divorces in her childhood, Renée Piane, The Love Designer, was conditioned to believe that true love does not exist. As Renée entered the dating world, she found herself making the same mistakes she had seen in other unsuccessful relationships. It wasn’t until she looked within her own heart that Renée realized she was prohibiting herself from finding love. Today, Renée is on a mission to reignite the love in people’s hearts and reinvent their approach to dating and relationships.
Renée explains why it is crucial to learn how to love yourself before you begin dating after a divorce. Renée encourages women to be honest with themselves and only give their time to someone who aligns with their goals and desires. When you take the time to slow things down, you allow yourself to understand what priorities need to be set in your life and naturally increase the chances of finding success in your love life.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy for an honest conversation with the Love Designer, Renée Piane. Learn more about common dating mistakes, the importance of slowing down, and how to change your destiny by getting real about love.
Quotes:
• “The choice of your life partner is one of the most important decisions you will ever make in your life. Take your time and choose wisely” - Renée Piane
• “I help people that are reinventing their lives and want to make shifts and changes. I take a look at all the parts of their lives and then design a plan for them in their unique situation.” (01:16-01:29)
• “Every single mom or even single person that I work with, I help them to evaluate where they are so they can see that they might be blocking themselves with fear or sadness.” (04:42-04:56)
• “Usually in the 35 to 55 range, half of my clients were divorced and not finding love. When I would do an evaluation in classes that I was teaching, I realized most of them had heartbreaks, had bad role models, were from divorced families, or they just married the wrong person too quickly.” (05:52-06:15)
• “A lot of men really are happy when they meet a single mom if she's got her balance together.” (10:32-10:39)
• “It's very important how you come across when you're in a divorce. It can be very painful and sometimes you imprint your children not to believe in love as well, and that could push men away.” (14:16-14:29)
• “To me, marriage is a sacred bond with someone that's aligned with your vision and you have to take it step-by-step.” (24:42-24:49)

Aging Through Motherhood
Thursday Nov 04, 2021
Thursday Nov 04, 2021
Christine Lee is the Founder and Managing Director of Casa Companion Homecare Solutions, a successful home care agency providing in-home care to seniors in San Diego County. In 2015, Christine co-founded the first Daughterhood Circle in San Diego. Daughterhood Circle is a support group and brain trust for caregivers dealing with the challenges of eldercare. While maintaining her role in the community, Christine is also a mother to three daughters, all under five years old, and a daughter of an aging mother.
Christine shares the biggest challenge she has faced in her life. Two weeks after finding out she was pregnant with her first child, Christine was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since she was pregnant, Christine was limited in treatment options and was forced to make decisions no mother should have to make. Together, Christine and her husband patiently waited nine months to bring their first daughter into the world before beginning the appropriate treatment for her cancer. Christine says her mother's example of what strength looks like in motherhood has guided her through navigating her own challenges with motherhood.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy to learn more about the importance of long-term care and how Christine has managed to maintain her career while balancing motherhood and being a caregiver.
Quotes:
• “One of the most challenging obstacles that I've gone through actually started right when I found out I was pregnant. In 2015, Gabriel and I had just found out that we were pregnant with our first child. We were super excited and really happy and then two weeks later, I was actually diagnosed with breast cancer.” (01:51-02:12)
• “My husband and I are good partners, and we know what we have to do together.” (08:34-08:37)
• “Because of the type of work that I do, I know what's involved in terms of getting ready for long-term care. And I’m at the point where I'm trying to get my parents ready to make sure that they age in a place where they want to be.” (11:06-11:21)
• “There's a lot of education that goes along with aging and long-term care planning in general.” (12:38-12:44)
• “There's a lot of gratitude for the people that I care for, but also for the people that are caring for them too.” (14:26-14:34)
• “As moms, we already are the epitome of strength.” (15:50-15:54)

Boundaries in a Blended Family
Thursday Oct 21, 2021
Thursday Oct 21, 2021
“Divorce isn’t easy, but it doesn’t need to be bitter,” says Bonnie A. Rabinovitch-Mantel, Family Lawyer. After going through a divorce and transitioning into a blended family, Bonnie decided to make the transition from medical malpractice to family law. Bonnie’s first-hand experience in divorce and step-parenting opened her eyes to the need for strong, yet ethical family attorneys. Today, Bonnie runs her own firm where she guides families through the process of divorce in a healthy way for everyone involved.
One of the first lessons Bonnie learned as a step-parent was the need for boundaries. Even though she initially wanted to jump straight in by implementing her parenting style on the kids, Bonnie soon realized that she needed to take a few steps back. The reality is divorce is hardest on the children. Bonnie explains that having to adjust to new parents while still remaining loyal to biological parents puts a huge amount of pressure on kids. In order to prioritize the best interest of the kids, Bonnie recommends setting healthy boundaries that respect both the children and the other parent.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy to learn tips on setting boundaries, the importance of co-parenting, and how to make the most of your blended household.
Quotes:
• “You have to make sacrifices and decide when am I going to work? And when am I going to be a parent?” (06:38-06:42)
• “The turning point was seeing how my actions affected our kids.” (10:44-10:49)
• “Obviously you parent your step children when you're with them but you have to know your boundaries.” (11:15-11:19)
• “Not every divorce or blended family is toxic.” (13:21-13:26)
• “Divorce is not easy but it doesn't have to be bitter.” (15:06-15:09)
• “A strong mom is not afraid to tackle any road block in their way. However, they recognize the need for self-care because we know if we aren't good, nobody is good.” (23:00-23:12)

Thursday Sep 23, 2021
“I’m grateful that the definition of strength has evolved & changed. It’s no longer about doing everything on your own,” says Niki Jones, Owner of San Diego Moms Blog. When Niki was transitioning to single motherhood, she found herself deep in stress trying to stay on top of everything. As someone who always considered herself to be independent, Niki had to learn the power of asking for help.
As a single mother and entrepreneur, there is no time for burnout. According to Niki, one of the ways she manages stress is by taking care of herself first. Niki believes that prioritizing herself makes her a better mother to her daughter and a better business owner to her community.
Her passion for giving back has allowed her to create unbreakable bonds with other moms within her community. Whenever Niki experiences hardship, she knows she can rely on the support of her loving network. Without them, she knows that she wouldn’t be the strong mother she is today.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy to hear more about Niki Jones journey through entrepreneurship and motherhood as a single mother. Learn more about the community that she created through her blog and how that community has transformed into her lifeline.
Quotes:

- “I think it’s important for our kids to see us put ourselves first so they can do that later in life.” (07:38-07:44)
- “I’m grateful that the definition of strength has evolved & changed. It’s no longer about doing everything on your own.”

Memorable Moments for Moms
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
Angela Quisumbing, event strategist and celebration specialist, has found some of the greatest joy in raising her two beautiful kids in southern California. While Angela always strongly desired to be a mom, she also knew that there was more to her identity. In recent years, she has pioneered several businesses that help other women step into their spotlights through events.
When Angela’s kids were young, she spent most of her time at home. With extra time on her hands, she began to develop ideas where she could be involved in her community and still maintain the stay-at-home-mom lifestyle. Initially, she crafted a weekly blog that shared stories of her journey through motherhood, which ultimately opened the door for her to expand her business opportunities. Eventually, Angela found herself partnering with local businesses to put on events so moms in the community had a chance to participate in something fun.
Throughout Angela’s adventures as a mother and entrepreneur, she has found strength within her community. During tough times, the moms she serves have always stepped in to make sure that the show goes on.
Tune into this episode of AskMamaAmy for a conversation about the importance of community. Learn how Angela maintains her role as a mom while pursuing her passion to help other women celebrate their successes!
Quotes:
- “I was comfortable being at home with my kids, but there was a struggle. I loved being a mom, but I want to do something else. I want to be me.” (06:02-06:15)

- “How can you serve the best way you can with the resources that you have?” (19:09-19:12)

Wednesday Aug 18, 2021
“Whatever is in front of you, you have to push through”, says Stephanie Labile, owner of Unique Heartbeat. When both of her daughters were diagnosed with severe allergies and other physical disabilities, Stephanie had to learn the ropes on her own. She started Unique Heartbeat as a way to help other families in her community that face similar challenges.
The only option to find the right foods for her daughters is to experiment with them. This process can be traumatic and result in either one of her daughters going into anaphylactic shock. Stephanie finds her strength within her support system. The support from her family has helped Stephanie be the best mother she can be by keeping her girls healthy. Together, Stephanie and her mom have learned to read labels, and form systems that keep everyone protected.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy for a conversation with Stephanie Labile about her non-traditional journey through motherhood. Learn more about how to live an organic life on a budget so you and your family can enjoy peace in your unique homes!
