Kay Carreon spent most of her career in the corporate world. Like many others, Kay was under the impression that she was in a solid financial situation. It wasn’t until she experienced a life-threatening condition during her second pregnancy, that Kay realized her finances were not as put together as she thought. It was her own experience that ultimately inspired her to change career paths. Today, Kay works as a Certified Financial Educator where she helps her clients achieve their individual financial goals.
According to Kay, one of the best things a person can do is work with a professional in the finance industry. At the end of the day, diversifying your portfolio will save you and your family from future financial struggles.

Midwives of Tourmaline Collective
Thursday May 12, 2022
Thursday May 12, 2022
As one of the most developed countries, the United States has one of the highest maternal death rates. For most American women, giving birth in a traditional hospital setting is their first choice. While this is a viable option, there are other safe and effective ways to give birth that are simply less known. In today’s episode, host Amy Hsaio is joined in conversation with Josie Patricio Petrich, Maral Shabak, and Allison Tartari, the Midwives of Tourmaline to discuss all things midwifery.
Even though all three women come from very different backgrounds, their goal is all the same: to provide women and their families with a safe and personalized birthing environment. According to the midwives, one of the most effective ways to increase safety in birth is to establish a genuine connection between the family and their provider. While hospitals are usually the first option, they don’t provide personalized care and often perform unnecessary medical interventions– which only increase the likelihood of something going wrong. At the end of the day, birth should be an empowering and transformative experience; and every woman deserves the chance to choose the option that will make her feel safe.
Tune into this week’s episode of Ask Mama Amy to learn more about the role of a midwife, the importance of personalized birthing care, and how midwifery provides women with a safe space to give a natural and beautiful birth.
Quotes:
• “I was able to see how difficult Western medicine can be on anybody who's not a cis-white male. And so I really wanted to explore how to support women and non binary people in different ways, especially around birth, because by definition, it’s not a medical procedure.” (05:38-06:02 Maral)
• “After giving birth in the hospital with my first daughter, I realized that the hospital wasn't really set up to give individualized care or to share the goals of what every family is working towards.” (07:25-07:42 Josie)
• “I wanted to support women and families giving birth. But I wanted to do it on their terms and not within the confinement of protocols and regulations that aren't really governed on individualized care or safety.” (08:20-08:45 Josie)
• “You can only birth successfully in a place where you feel safe.” (16:09-16:12 Maral)
• “In America, we have the highest maternal death rate in all developed countries, and it's just because of a lack of community, lack of individualized care, and unneeded interventions.” (20:25-20:39 Allison)
• ”A strong mom is a mom that knows what she wants and is not fixated on the outcome, but really indulges in the journey that is motherhood.” (23:45-23:57 Josie)

“The world is a puzzle full of mosaic tiles and we’re creating this beautiful picture together as we piece together their education,” shares Janelle Schroy, Co-founder and Producer of Adventure Family Journal. Understanding the positive impact of traveling, Janelle and her husband made the decision to educate their children by immersing them in cultures around the world. Through her YouTube series, travel blog, and upcoming book, Janelle shares her family’s journey through over 50 countries with the hopes of inspiring other parents to travel with their children.
According to Janelle, kids are sponges and are not given enough credit for how much they are able to learn from the world around them. To get the most of their education, Janelle approaches teaching by fully immersing her children in the culture, language, and history of each country they visit. Her ultimate goal is to encourage other parents to redefine the way they view education by exploring the world with their children.
Tune into this week’s episode of Ask Mama Amy to learn more about the impact of world travel and how to utilize it to broaden your children’s education.
Quotes:
• “We do about 2 or 3 hours a day of iPad based work and the rest of it is experiential wherever we are.” (5:06-5:12)
• “We really believe that full immersion is the way to go.” (9:44-9:47)
• “I think I developed a can-do attitude. A sense of when money needs to be there, I can find a way to create an income source.” (17:32-17:41)
• “See the world as your classroom. It doesn’t matter what schooling choice you’ve made with your kids. If you have them in any form of school or homeschool, the big picture is they’re a sponge.” (23:43-23:52)

Protecting Your Intellectual Property with Kristen Gonzales Roberts
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
Thursday Mar 10, 2022
In a continuously advancing world, “having a plan for your intellectual property early on is important,” says Kristen Gonzales Roberts, Founder and Managing Attorney of Trestle Law, APC. Kristen is highly experienced in the realm of trademark and copyright law and has dedicated most of her career to helping businesses and individuals develop, protect, and recognize the value of their intellectual property. In today’s episode, host Amy Hsiao sits down with Kristen to discuss motherhood and all things intellectual property.
According to Kristen, many entrepreneurs make the mistake of not prioritizing the IP early on. Working with an attorney can be expensive, however, Kristen explains that understanding and developing your brand correctly the first time will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. To get the best use of your IP, it is important to look at it holistically. You want to not only get the proper trademarks, copyrights, or patents, but you also want to understand how to leverage your intellectual property and take your business to the next level.
Tune into this week’s episode of Ask Mama Amy to learn more about the importance of time-blocking and strategizing a plan to preserve your intellectual property so you can better protect your business now and in the future.
Quotes:
• “We build our clients a bridge from their brands to their bank accounts.” (01:19-01:23)
• “Once my husband and I decided to have kids, I had to start designing my life, practice, and the way that I approached law a little bit differently.” (04:51-04:58)
• “I think moms are some of the best, strongest, and most powerful people out there because we have to be. We have so many things pulling our focus and time that we have to learn where we can be super-efficient and just get things done.” (05:02-05:14)
• “It's not about balance, it's about just making sure that you get the things done that are necessary. Sometimes things are going to fall short and sometimes you're going to need extra support from your partner.” (06:48-07:00)
• “When you have things like lessons, appointments, and activities in your kid's life that you want to be present for, you have to factor that into your work life.” (09:04-09:20)
• “While you have common law rights, sometimes those common law rights are very broad and they're not very good at protecting you fully the same way registrations do. So having a plan for your intellectual property early on is important.” (12:35-12:49)
• “Most entrepreneurs tend to pigeonhole their IP into individual boxes instead of taking a holistic approach to it.” (12:53-13:03)
• “I really don't think that we should be judging each other because we already get so much judgment from the world that we, as moms, need to be as supportive of one another as we can be.” (27:31-27:43)

How to Have a Positive Birthing Experience
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
Thursday Feb 10, 2022
“It's my life's work to help people have better births,” says Dr. Deb Davies, DACM, L.Ac. After losing her first daughter at 40 weeks, Deb understands the trauma that can occur in the birthing process. Through her experience, Deb brings a remarkable degree of empathy to her practice and teaching. Known as the birth geek, Deb has proudly helped thousands of families through their pregnancy and childbirth journeys.
According to Deb, the best thing any pregnant woman can do is get educated. The United States is one of the few countries where medical doctors are preferred over midwives. Birthing in a hospital can be a good option, but it is important to know how each hospital operates before choosing where you want to deliver. If you spend the time learning about all of your options, you are more likely to have a positive experience.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy to learn more about the misconceptions regarding birth, the role of a doula, and the difference between a midwife and an OB, so you can make informed decisions and have a safe and happy birthing experience.
Quotes:
• “I turned around the worst thing in my life and made it the best thing in my life. My career's 100% focused around birth now.” (02:35-02:42)
• “When women experience loss or difficulty conceiving, it's really nice to help, share hope, and give them some more options.” (03:39-03:48)
• “At this point, the United States average C section rate is 34%. So, one in three women are having major abdominal surgeries.” (10:14-10:24)
• “In my experience, the women coming out of birth the happiest have midwives.” (10:54-10:58)
• “The one thing that you need to do when you're in labor is relax.” (14:14-14:18)
• “It's my life's work to help people have better births and have better experiences.” (20:22-20:27)
• “A strong mom is somebody who is empowered, educated, determined, and willing to go the extra mile for their child.” (20:55-21:05)

Encouraging Confidence in Young Women
Thursday Dec 30, 2021
Thursday Dec 30, 2021
After realizing that she is the number one influence in her daughter’s life, Keisha Montfleury became inspired to spread awareness about building self-confidence in young girls. Currently, Keisha is the founder of Abundantly Authentic, a faith-based nonprofit organization that teaches young women the principles of self-confidence. In today’s episode, Keisha breaks down the five keys to building confidence and living authentically.
As women, we have a responsibility to provide the younger generation with tools and strategies for success. According to Keisha, self-esteem is built around practicing self-care, good health, understanding your purpose, and investing time in things that propel you forward. Having self-confidence not only helps women understand themselves, but also prevents them from engaging in dangerous behavior. It is important to teach these strategies to girls early on so they develop healthy habits and demand self-confidence in their younger and formative years.
Tune into this week’s episode of AskMamaAmy to learn about how to encourage self-confidence in young women so they can recognize their purpose, live authentically, and build the foundation for healthy relationships with themselves and others.
Quotes:
• “I'm the first person that my daughter sees as a healthy confident woman and what that looks like.” (07:46-07:52)
• “My divorce was devastating, but it allowed me to rise into the woman that I'm called to be so that I'm able to make an impact in my life and my children's life.” (08:20-08:32)
• “I want girls to know that they are authentic and we need them. We need their purpose and what they are put on this earth for.” (10:55-11:06)
• “We want to make sure that our girls have the foundation of healthy confidence so they’re not easily discouraged in situations that are proven to be dangerous such as self-harm or bullying.” (12:12-12:28)
• “Strong means being able to withstand force or pressure.” (20:00-20:04)
